[News] Google Maps is Finally Going Offline!

Google has announced in their Meeting on June 6th, that it will be taking Maps offline, right down to the Street View detail. Read more for details...

No, Google is not shutting down their Maps app, but instead is improving the Maps functionality and is giving you advanced navigation and mapping features by allowing it to be used without a valid data connection! This would be perfect for areas with weak cell coverage. An update to Maps for Android will go live in 100 countries over the next few weeks to provide users with offline access to Google Maps data for selected locations.

We are unclear to how exactly Google will be implementing this feature into Maps, though a Maps for Android Labs option is currently available, and has been for the year or two. With this feature, users can choose to select an area they would like to download a map for, and Google Maps would start a download process for offline access. We would expect this feature to come out of it's beta form and land on a full updated Maps application and hopefully with some minor bug-fixes and feature enhancements. In fact we also have word that something very advanced will be coming to Google Maps hopefully with the upcoming update.... Click here for more info!

On a plus note, everyone will sure be wanting to cut down on those data charges, won't we?
