[News] Nokia Lumia 820 owners will be able to customize their phone with 3D printers

Nokia is again looking for ways to make its products stand out in the community. It will be the first company to embrace the 3D printing company by making available the files that will let smartphone users create their own custom shell/s!

The Nokia Lumia 820 currently uses an interchangeable shell that allows each user to wirelessly charge their device and also to be able to choose from a range of colours! These can now be expanded upon with the option to be able to print custom shells!

John Kneeland , Nokia Community and Development Marketing Manager says: "Nokia’s 3D printing community project is a simple concept with exciting potential. Our Lumia 820 has a removable shell that users can replace with Nokia-made shells in different colors, special ruggedized shells with extra shock and dust protection, and shells that add wireless charging capabilities found in the high-end Lumia 920 to the mid-range 820."

For those people that want to design their own custom shells for their Lumia phones, Nokia is releasing 3D templates, case specs and recommended materials plus what are the best ways to make them. Mechanical drawings are either in STL or STP file formats and these can be downloaded from the company's developer website. You cannot sell your own custom-made shells as the license is only for non-commercial use.

What do you think of 3D printing? Is it blowing your minds away? Tell us about it in the comments section!
