[News] Google releases Google Drive

Today Google unveiled Google Drive, the cloud based storage service for videos, photos, documents and more.

Google Docs is built into Google Drive, allowing users to collaborate in real time with others on documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Users can add and change the document, and can also comments on Adobe PDF files, images and videos. Users of Google Drive will also receive notifications when others comment on shared content.

Users can also open files saved in formats exclusive to programs, such as photoshop, despite not having that program installed on their computer.

Documents and other files stored on Google Drive can be accessed from any device connected to the internet. Drive can be installed on both Macs and PCs, with an app available for Android phones and tablets. Google say they are currently working on an iOS app as well.

Google has also included an enhanced search function. Drive uses Optical Character Recognition technology to recognise text in scanned documents. Users can also make use of image recognition technology whilst searching for photos in Drive. Users can also search by keyword and then filter results by file type and owner.

Google offers a starting limit of 5GB of cloud storage for free, whilst rival Dropbox only offers 2GB for no charge. There are then upgrades of 25GB for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or 1TB for $49.99. Google also offers an expanded Gmail storage to 25GB with a paid for Drive account.
